Background: Geographical/geometric indicators like azimuth provide a real-time and low-cost method of measuring spatial performance during navigation, especially in view of their accessibility on mobile phones in the form of a compass or GPS. This study aimed to investigate azimuth-based assessment of spatial orientation performance and its potential in diagnosing cognitive problems. Methods: This was an applied research, and included multivariate logistic regression and multi-layer neural network analysis. We measured the spatial orientation performance of participants using an azimuth-based compass. Their demographic data, including age, gender, years of driving experience, field of study, and cognitive health status were collected. The s
The purpose of this study was to combine the volitional strategies and messages with motivational design in e-learning and its effectiveness on student’s cognitive load and volitional dimensions. In order to achieve this goal, a mixed method - convergent triangulation design - was used. The statistical population of this study was students of Shahid Modares campus of Farhangian university of Kurdistan. In the quantitative phase, a quasi-experimental design with a control group was used. In this regard, firstly, three classes with a capacity of 85 students selected through available sampling method and then randomly one class assigned to experimental and two classes assigned to control group. In the qualitative section, 9 people were selec
This study compared the effects of support for peer feedback, peer feedforward and their combination on students’ peer learning processes, argumentative essay quality and domain‐specific learning. Participants were 86 BSc students who were randomly divided over 43 dyads. These dyads, in a two‐factorial experimental design, were assigned to four conditions including: peer feedback (n?=?22), peer feedforward (n?=?22), mixed (n?=?20) and control group (n?=?22) conditions. An online peer feedback environment named EduTech was designed which allowed us to implement various types of support in the form of question prompts. In this online environment, students were asked to write an argumentative essay on a controversial topic, to engage i
The present study aims to investigate the existing status of environmental education in the second elementary school based on the components of environmental education. The methodology was the content analysis method of Entropy Shannon, which presents data processing in the context of content analysis with a new, quantitative and qualitative look. The content of the project was responsive (all 4th, 5th and 6th grade books), and 9 main components and 43 subcomponents. The results of content analysis showed that out of a total of 848 pages of the fourth elementary books, in total (189) pages, and 895 pages of the fifth grade of primary books in total (127) pages and from 914 pages of the sixth grade books in elementary The total (127) pages r
This study compared the effects of worked example and scripting on students’ argumentative peer feedback, essay and learning qualities. Participants were 80 BSc students who were randomly divided over 40 dyads and assigned to two experimental conditions (worked example and scripting). An online peer feedback environment named EduTech was designed and students were tasked with writing an argumentative essay, engaging in peer feedback, and revising their essay. The results indicate that students in the scripting condition benefited more than students in the worked example condition regarding peer feedback quality. Furthermore, the scores of students in both conditions improved from pre-test to post-test in terms of argumentativ
The purpose of this research was to study the perceived readiness of higher education students for computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL). Moreover, the role of important demographic variables, such as gender, major of study, and computer ownership, was examined in students’ perceived readiness and its sub-scales. The data was collected from 326 higher education students of four study groups from a state university in Iran. MANOVA analysis was conducted to explore the possible role of the demographic variables in students’ perceived readiness for CSCL. Most of the participants showed high readiness for CSCL. The male participants demonstrated more online learning aptitude compared to females. A statistically significant differ
This study maps instructional support and learning outcomes of argumentation game-based learning. For this systematic review, 29 publications dating from 2000 through 2019 were studied to highlight the foci of this field of research. Although these studies reported effects of game-based learning on learning outcomes and instructional supports on argumentation skills, none of the publications reported specific instructional support and game elements associated with the learning outcomes. Modeling, reflection and feedback were the most commonly reported instructional support of argumentation game-based learning. Feedback, challenge, and collaboration were the most commonly reported game elements of argumentation game-based learning. In additi
The present study was conducted to evaluate the quality of the learning-teaching process of the pre-school centers based on the International ECERS standard. For this purpose, 24 pre-school centers were selected based on multi-stage sampling from different regions of the county and custodial organizations and their learning-teaching process quality was evaluated. First, data were collected using observation techniques and ECERS interviews. In the next stage, the status of pre-school centers was judged in the levels of quadruple spectrum: "inadequate, low, good and excellent". At the end and after analyzing the findings, operational solutions based on improving the quality of ECERS standard were presented. Based on the findings of this study
Background: Empathy is a skill that has been proved effective in learning and teaching processes. Objectives: The aim of this study was to explore the relationship between students’ empathy and their learning behaviors. Methods: A fuzzy clustering-based method (an area of artificial intelligence) was used, according to which students were classified to clusters based on their empathy measures. Students’ empathy was assessed through a questionnaire. Overall, 345 students (11 to 13 years old) from six schools located in three different areas of Tehran, Iran, participated in this study, selected by multistage cluster sampling. In this method, similar samples are classified in one cluster and, then, clusters can be labeled based on their attr
This study presents a pattern for of Home Computer Use (HCU) and its relation to children’s social and behavioural development during primary education. This study answers whether and how HCU (either educational or recreational) during primary school is related to children’s social/behavioural development such as self-regulation, anti-social behaviour and pro-social behaviour. To do so, information about types and frequency of HCU from nearly 2000 children were analysed using hierarchical linear regression and path analysis on children ranging from 3 to 11 years old. Hierarchical linear regression was applied to study the main effects (ie direct effects) and the path analysis was used to investigate mediating (ie indirect effects) of HC
This chapter critically reviews the creation and development of the concepts “childhood” and “ECE” in contemporary Iran. Childhood is a cultural concept so the time and place give a different interpretation to it. Iranian history in the past 150 years has experienced social, political and cultural changes which have impacted the way children and childhood were understood and acted. Using a cultural-historical lens, the author intends to review and analyze these interpretations of childhood and the way they have affected the education of young children, parenting, the image of children in the society and the agency or passiveness of children in the community they live in.
This study conceptualizes" digital divide" among school children. The concept of digital divide is elaborated on the basis of the layers of technology adoption such as" access"," effective use" and" the social envelope" around children's use of home computers. In this study, a theoretical framework of" digital divide" is proposed consisting of social, economic, individual and cultural aspects of the digital divide among children. Based on this framework, we argue that inequalities among children can strongly be affected by the social/cultural environment around home computing ie parents’ computing practices at home and the home learning environment. As a result, we argue that access to a supportive ‘social envelope’is the area in whic
The purpose of this study is understanding the Personal Practical Knowledge (PPK) of teachers which has been done through qualitative method. Understanding PPK helps us to understand why teachers act in a specific way. In this regards, reflecting on their personal and professional narratives also help to improve their practice. This study was conducted along with 13 teachers in a non-profit primary school in Tehran. The results of the study indicate teachers’ rich knowledge of factors affecting success of the teaching profession. However, the data obtained from the observations show the difference between what the teacher describes as a successful teacher and effective teaching, and what happens in their practice. The dynamic and contextu
