Medical Informatics

History

The Department of Medical Informatics was founded in 2010 when it began accepting students at the postgraduate level. One of the primary objectives of this department is to train specialized personnel for postgraduate programs and education, conduct applied research in the field of medical informatics and related areas, and push the boundaries of science and technology in line with top universities in Iran and around the world. Although the recording of medical information dates back to ancient times, modern systems such as the Electronic Health Record (EHR) have only recently been implemented in advanced countries. In Iran, the development of this field began in 2008. Despite its novelty, Medical Informatics is rapidly gaining interest and demand due to its interdisciplinary and mixed nature, combining computer and medical sciences. On the other hand, the countrys relatively strong position in the fields of medicine and computer science, including software and expert capabilities, as well as its alignment with other prosperous countries in the region and the world, have resulted in satisfactory outcomes for the country in these areas. However, while progress in these fields is high, the countrys diverse needs also present significant challenges.

The Mission of the Department
  • The training of specialized and dedicated human resources with the necessary skills to provide interdisciplinary services based on information and communication technology (ICT) in the field of medicine and healthcare for related organizations.
  • Education and research in areas necessary to equip members and graduates with the skills needed for digital transformation in healthcare.
  • Conducting applied research to develop products and provide services in the healthcare industry, with a particular focus on medical big data, artificial intelligence and digital (smart) hospitals. This research will be conducted in collaboration with top universities in Iran and around the world.
  • The Medical Informatics Department of Tarbiat Modares University is being scientifically branded in two areas: medical big data and smart hospitals.
  • Launching new and necessary interdisciplinary courses.
  • National and international networking in order to fulfill the missions of the strategic plan of the group
  • Utilizing the expertise of other groups within the Faculty of Medicine and Tarbiat Modares University to enhance the implementation of medical informatics and introduce new interdisciplinary courses. Collaborating with these groups to implement or launch additional interdisciplinary courses.
  • Facilitating the establishment of businesses related to the field by faculty members, students, and graduates.
  • Developing an open-data platform for the healthcare data of the country.
Values of the Medical Informatics Department
  • The use of technology can improve safety, minimize medical risks and hazards, enhance the quality of medical care and community health, reduce the suffering of patients and families, and lower costs.
  • Compliance with the general policies, programs, and missions of Tarbiat Modares University and the Ministry of Health, Treatment, and Medical Education.
  • Quality in all aspects of education, research, entrepreneurship, and executive culture.
