Philsophy And Logic

With the establishment of Tarbiat Modares University and its Faculty of Humanities in 1982, the university began to admit master students in Islamic philosophy and theology. By 1985, the Faculty of Humanities was fully operational, and shortly thereafter, the Islamic Philosophy and Theology department was created. When the organizational structure of the Faculty of Humanities was reformed in 1996, the name of the department was changed to "Philosophy and Wisdom".

In 1990, with the admission of Ph.D. students in two sub-disciplines of Transcendent Theosophy and Philosophy- logic, the department entered its second stage of development. By 1997, the activities of the department reached beyond the realm of Islamic philosophy. At this time, the Western Philosophy Department was established, and offered its own master program.

This department experienced its first curriculum development task in 1999 when it became engaged in the design and development of a master program for a field named "Philosophy-logic". The critical evaluation and analysis of educational experiences that took place in the 80s and 90s led the department to fundamentally review and modify all its curricula and syllabi. Accordingly, in 2002, the doctoral program of "Philosophical Logic? replaced ?Islamic Philosophy and Logic?.

At present, the department includes three master programs in

  • Philosophy- logic
  • Islamic philosophy and theology
  • Western philosophy

and two PhD programs:

  • Philosophy- logic
  • Islamic philosophy and theology

Based on students? entrance exam scores, this department has been ranked first in the last two years in the fields of Philosophy and Logic, whereas it has ranked third in Western Philosophy. At the doctoral level of Transcendent Philosophy, it enjoys the highest rank based on the scores of its applicants, the publications its students and faculty have produced, and the percentage of alumni recruited as faculty members of universities all over the country. More than 90% of the department?s Ph.D. graduates serve as faculty members in philosophy departments of universities across the country.
