The Department of Statistics was founded as an affiliated department of Basic Sciences Faculty in 1983 with an aim of training dedicated and qualified teaching staff for universities. The early teaching staff of the department were: Dr. Mohammad Reza Meshkani, Dr. Eynollah Pasha, Dr. Ahmad Reza Soltani, and the late Dr. Abbas Gholi Khajenouri. The department in the early days of its activities, held its own entrance exam. At that time, it offered 45 credit specialized courses and 22 general credit courses. The alumni of the department were immediately recruited as faculty members by different universities. This department has proposed a curricula for PhD. The department of statistics admits students in master and PhD programs in specialized branches such as statistical inference, spatial statistics, shape statistics, official statistics as well as statistical analysis of multilevel and longitudinal data. It has to be said that more than 60 percent of master graduates have managed to continue their studies at Ph.D. level either in Iran or abroad. Moreover, 90 percent of its alumni work as faculty members. This department, in collaboration with Ferdowsi University has managed to establish a Center of Excellence for Sequential and Spatial Data Studies. Another achievement of this faculty concerns the writing of the first book in Persian on 'Spatial Data' and hosting the 6th International Conference on Statistics in 2002. Close collaboration with Iran Statistics Center, Iran Statistics Research Center, and Iranian Association of Statistics are indicatives of this faculty's research tendencies.
