The Department of Urban Planning of TMU was founded in 1997 with the aim of educating specialists who can professionally integrate in the field of educational, research and practical areas (planning, design and implementation of urban projects) and solve the problems in this field. Ph.D. Program in Urban Planning in the branch of Urban Planning Theories was launched with the admission of 4 doctorate students in October 2009. The department strives to educate students who are both familiar with modern urban issues and can play a role in the resolving of urban problems of their community by carrying out practical researches and projects.
Since 2010, urban planning has developed into three branches of urban planning, regional planning and urban design. As a result, the department name was changed from urban planning to urban design and urban and regional planning.
